Indoor Pools

An indoor pool is a dream for many investors, which only a few people with very high incomes could afford a few decades ago. They were not afraid of relatively high construction and maintenance costs of a private pool. Currently, more and more people decide to build an indoor pool inside their home. If you are also considering such an investment, you should familiarize yourself with this text. We will not only point out the advantages and limitations of this solution but also everything you need to know before deciding to build a private pool in a new single-family home.

Indoor Pool - When Is It a Good Idea and When Is It Not?

Swimming allows you to maintain your health, fitness, and well-being for years. Additionally, it provides considerable pleasure. If you and your loved ones enjoy swimming, do it frequently, and want access to a pool 24/7, then having a year-round indoor pool will undoubtedly be a wise investment, saving you a lot of time. However, if you swim occasionally, it will be much cheaper to continue using public pools, and the money saved (which can be substantial) can be invested in something else. An indoor pool makes sense only if it is regularly used; otherwise, it will be a clear waste of both money and the available space in the building.

Therefore, before deciding to build a pool under your roof, honestly ask yourself why you want to have it? If it's for the sake of maintaining health into old age, that's perfect; if it's to impress friends, it's not worth it. It's definitely better to find another way that will also bring joy to you and your loved ones.

Building an Indoor Pool

To avoid significant installation errors during the construction of an indoor pool, it is best to decide on its creation at the initial stage of designing the single-family home. Mistakes made during the creation of indoor pools often result in excessive room condensation, damaging the window joinery and other elements used to furnish the interior where the pool is located. Often, there is also a situation where the chlorine smell from the pool spreads to other rooms in the house. Needless to say, this is an extremely unpleasant experience for the residents, especially if it is difficult to effectively address the issue.

It is definitely more beneficial to plan the construction of the pool as early as possible and, as a result, ensure proper wall insulation, moisture insulation, and installation of a highly efficient ventilation system. Additionally, keep in mind that you will need the project to obtain legal permission to build an indoor pool in your home. Our many years of experience in the industry dating back to 1991 clearly show that both the design and efficient construction of an indoor pool within a single-family building are best entrusted to professionals who will take care of it from A to Z. Investors who entrust the construction of a turnkey home to New-House can count on professional support at every stage of the construction project, including designing and creating an indoor pool in a new home.

Appropriate Size of the Indoor Pool

The final size of the pool located inside a single-family home depends directly on how you plan to use it. For strictly recreational use, a pool with the following dimensions is sufficient:

  • Length: 8 to 12 meters

  • Width: 4 to 8 meters

  • Depth: 1.5 meters

Such a pool offers practically unlimited possibilities for use. In addition to classical swimming, it can be used for playing water polo or practicing aqua aerobics. However, if you want to practice diving, your indoor pool should have a minimum depth of 2.3 meters under the trampoline.

Proper Placement of the Indoor Pool Inside the House

If we already know the dimensions of our home pool, we need to consider where in the house we want to build it. We must also decide on the choice of the pool basin.

The dimensions of the basin are determined by the expected size of the indoor pool, and its shape can be arbitrary. The pools in indoor pools are most often made of durable reinforced concrete or concrete additionally covered with ceramics. However, it is worth mentioning that on the market, you can also find basins made of steel sheet, acrylic, PVC laminate, and resins (polyester and epoxy). The most commonly used finishing material is ceramic tiles. Spectacular glass mosaic is also popular. Alternatively, weldable PVC foil can be used. In general, the choice of solutions depends on the individual expectations of the investor and the wealth of their portfolio.

Essential Elements for the Proper Functioning of the Indoor Pool

Water Treatment System in the Indoor Pool

For the use of the indoor pool to be safe and comfortable, the water in it should have a specific pH level. It is generally accepted that it should oscillate around 7.2 to 7.6. A modern water treatment system is necessary to keep the pool clean. Specialized sand, gravel, and gravel-anthracite filters are used to create it. One should not forget about chemicals whose task is the effective disinfection of the water in the home pool. A few years ago, chlorine agents were the most popular, but now non-chlorine agents (ozone, bromine, or iodine) are also gaining popularity.

Air Conditioning and Ventilation System for the Home Indoor Pool

An efficient air conditioning and ventilation system allows for effective air exchange in the room where the pool is located. It is also necessary to maintain the proper humidity of the air and the constant temperature expected by the residents (preferably about 2 degrees higher than the water temperature). Air conditioning and ventilation for the pool is essential for both its proper functioning and the safety of the building's structure and its residents. Therefore, the installation of such important systems is worth entrusting to professionals, such as those from New-House, who will carry it out according to best practices, using modern solutions to ensure long-term efficiency.

Heating System for the Indoor Pool Water

Warm water is necessary for using the indoor pool comfortably and enjoyably inside the building. For this purpose, it is necessary to choose and install an efficient pool water heating system. It can be based, for example, on heat exchangers cooperating with the home heating system. Flow-through electric heaters can also be used, but it should be noted that the cost of their operation is relatively high. There are also investors who use solar collectors installed on a sunny roof or on the ground for heating the water in the home pool. As you can see, there are many possibilities in this area, so every investor is able to choose a heating solution that realistically meets their needs and expectations.

Technical Room for the Pool

For the smooth operation of the indoor pool, a technical room is needed where we will place the pump, water purification filters, and air conditioning unit. Space for such a room should be planned in close proximity to the pool. As we mentioned earlier, it is best and most convenient to do this at the stage of designing the single-family house, when the possibilities are practically unlimited.

Cost of Building an Indoor Pool in a House

Approximately, building an indoor pool in a single-family home will cost us from 120,000 Polish zlotys and upwards. The cost of building a pool usually includes a full package, meaning the design, excavation of the basin, its finishing, and the installation of necessary equipment. It's easy to notice that this is not a cheap undertaking, and at this price, you could easily buy a studio apartment—maybe not in Warsaw, but in a provincial city, most likely. It's definitely cheaper to create an indoor pool when designing and building the house. However, if you decide to fulfill the dream of an indoor pool when the house is already built, you should be aware that the cost of its construction will increase by about 25%. It is estimated that converting a basement into a covered pool will cost you that much more.

Costs of Maintaining an Indoor Pool

Remember that besides the construction cost, an indoor pool also generates monthly maintenance costs. These most often amount to 2 – 3 thousand Polish zlotys. However, one should be aware that maintaining larger pools can cost even up to 10 thousand Polish zlotys per month. The cost of maintaining an indoor pool includes: heating the pool water and its lighting, pool chemicals for cleaning, as well as ongoing servicing of equipment such as the pump and filters. Ongoing maintenance does not, however, cover the cost of repairing or replacing worn out, broken, or damaged elements. For this reason, it's worth choosing proven and high-quality solutions and devices for equipping the indoor pool, which will work reliably for longer than lower quality options. In the long run, it's simply more cost-effective.

Too Expensive? How About an Outdoor Pool Instead?

If the cost of building and ongoing operation of an indoor pool seems a bit daunting, you may want to consider building an outdoor pool in your backyard. It is not only cheaper but also easier. Moreover, such a pool allows you to spend more time outdoors and can be built even when the house has been in use for many years. The only limitation in this case is the size of the property, which determines the pool's surface area. Unfortunately, this solution, besides numerous advantages, also has drawbacks. The most obvious one is the change of seasons that occurs at our geographical latitude, which prevents using the outdoor pool in cold times of the year. An outdoor pool will realistically be used for about 8-10 weeks per year. Therefore, you should consider whether such an option is satisfactory for you or if you would prefer to invest in a covered pool. An indoor pool will be a better solution, especially if you don't want to deal with regular cleaning and removing contaminants from an outdoor pool, which gets dirtier much more easily.

Indoor Pool – Is It Worth It?

Building an indoor pool in a single-family home should be well thought out. It's worthwhile to consider whether such a space will be used frequently enough and whether we can afford both the construction of the pool and its ongoing maintenance, which, as we have shown above, is not cheap. However, if you enjoy water activities and want to have the unlimited opportunity to practice your favorite sport 365 days a year, it's definitely worth considering building your own indoor swimming pool. Your body and physique will certainly thank you for this decision, and thanks to swimming, you'll feel healthier, more fit, and simply happier.
